Non-GMO Foods and Seeds is an online store that promotes non-GMO products for big brands. Plants, animals, microorganisms, and other organisms are referred to as genetically modified when their genetic makeup is altered (The NON-GMO Project, 2016).
What is genetic modification?
Genetic modification is usually done in laboratories. Genetic modification occurs when plants, animals, microorganisms, or other organisms whose genetic makeup are altered in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial, and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.
Genetic modification affects many of the products that humans consume on a daily basis. As the number of GMOs available for commercial use grows every year, the Non-GMO Project works diligently to provide the most accurate, up-to-date standards for non-GMO verification.
What are non-GMO Project Verified standards?
In order for a product to be Non-GMO Project Verified, its inputs must be evaluated for compliance with Non-GMO Project standards. Under the standards, products are categorized as high risk, low risk, or no risk.
The non-GMO Project verified seal is placed on the labels of products that have been verified as non-GMO.
